_______________ SUSTAINABILITY OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT IN COMPOSTELA, NAYARIT, MEXICO: A COMPLEX SYSTEMS APPROACH. ABSTRACT: This research with a complex systems approach had the objective of identifying instability criteria in agro-ecosystems and the level of sustainability for rural development. Farmers (n =163) and representatives of the Municipal Sustainable Development Council (n =14) were interviewed. Digital maps were created based on soil analyses (n = 4017) and different indicators obtained with mixed methodologies. The level of rational life (0.61 + 0.11) was associated (P < 0.05) with yield, energetic efficiency and soil deterioration because of deforestation. Moderately stable societies were identified (0.83 ± 0.4), related with social cohesion (P ≤0.05). The diversity of agroecosystems (0.54 ± 0.16) was associated to the surface (r = 0.60) and farmers who are 100% identified with the field (r = 0.97); those who had activities outside the farm applied more pesticides (kg ha-1) (8.9 ± 1.7) and lixiviated fertilizers (96 ± 62). The agricultural/livestock (6.2 ± 4.8), forestry (0.41 ± 0.25), and social (2.9 ± 2.4) ecological footprint (ha) reflected an ecological debt, but self-sufficiency for corn (0.8) and beans (0.08). Neo-peasants were identified with priorities outside the farm are less sustainable (0.51 ± 0.07) (P ≤0.05) than the Intermediate group (0.56 ± 0.06), which is the one most rooted to the land; and Neo-landowners, related to both (0.54 ± 0.1) and who reflected more youth, education and energetic spending. The high region was more sustainable (0.58 ± 0.07) (P ≤0.05) than the coast (0.51 ± 0.06). The sustainable behavior (4.9 ± 1.8) was different (P ≤0.05) than the attitude (8.4 ± 1.0); but it did show social potential to construct an alternative language, still not stimulated by the communication network due to lack of conceptual structure. The society showed transition criteria towards sustainability, yet the dynamics implemented have not regulated exceeding entropic variations, and therefore, self-organization is a restructuring process.
