This thesis addresses the study of the collision of opposing sea breeze fronts over a narrow island-peninsula (IP). Numerical simulations of the evolution of breeze systems were carried out under idealized two-dimensional configurations with high horizontal resolution (500 m) using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The numerical simulations include cases with different peninsular widths (L), flat topography, idealized topography and realistic topographic cross sections for the Baja California peninsula (PBC) at 30 °, 27 °, 24.6 ° and 23.5 ° N. They also include the effects of the difference between the sea surface temperatures of the Gulf of California (GC) and the Pacific Ocean (OP) adjacent to the PBC. We also analyze three cases with contrasting cloud conditions over the study area during the summer season, by modifying the vertical profile of water vapor in the initial conditions: no cloudiness (SN), with the presence of a band a shallow cumulus (CU) and with the presence of deep convective cells (CP) over PBC. The results indicate that an upper limit exists on the propagation velocity of the breeze fronts when L is greater than 150 km. Forced convection associated with the propagation of the breeze front was observed for L greater than 75 km and could be caused by the collision of opposing breeze fronts or by the advancement of mature cells in wider sections. The interaction between the sea breeze circulations and those forced by the presence of topography (valley breezes) result in the intensification of both systems. The results highlight the effect greater topographic slopes on the intensification of the mountain-valley breezes. The contrast between the surface temperatures of OP and the GC is an additional agent for the intensification of the breeze systems that advance over PBC from the OP. The addition of water vapor content to the atmosphere effectively controls the formation and depth of clouds, strengthening the breeze systems through the reduction of static stability and the addition of thermodynamic available energy for convection.
