Between both [the two political big configurations, the Empire and the Papacy that neither they could be annihilated neither to be imposed one another, APM] they existed multitude in political ways... that they already existed or they arose whose existence it depended of their own capacity for to maintain it. Now then, where this tendency is overcome or balanced somehow, something arises new and I live in the history: the State as calculated creation and conscious, as work of art (Burckhardt, t. I, P. 4; underlined our). He/she devises this that he/she gives title to the whole first part of the study of J. Burckhardt and with the one that opens their book.
Entre ambos [las dos grandes configuraciones políticas, el Imperio y el Papado, que ni podían aniquilarse ni tampoco imponerse uno al otro, APM] existían multitud de formas políticas... que ya existían o surgieron, cuya existencia dependía de su propia capacidad para mantenerla. En ellas aparece el moderno espíritu europeo del Estado, entregándose por vez primera libremente a sus propios impulsos, revelando con excesiva frecuencia ese desenfrenado egoísmo que hace escarnio de todo derecho y ahoga en germen toda sana formación. Ahora bien, donde esta tendencia queda superada o equilibrada de algún modo, surge algo nuevo y vivo en la historia: el Estado como creación calculada y consciente, como obra de arte (Burckhardt, t. I, p. 4; subrayados nuestros). Escarnio de todo derecho”) anterior al „estado civil‟, todo ello que, ahí donde la tendencia a la retroyección es frenada o equilibrada, da como resultante algo “nuevo y vivo en la historia”: el Estado como obra de arte. Idea esta que le da título a toda la primera parte del estudio de J. Burckhardt y con el que abre su libro.
