The Ixtlan de los Hervores Geothermal Area (IHGA) has been developed in the combination of two tectonic regimes. One transtensive associated to the tectonics of the central sector of the Transmexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB) and other extensive associated with the current triple junction area related to west TMVB or the fragmentation of southern Mexico. Given this tectonic framework, the surroundings of the IHGA present monogenetic volcanism and sedimentary deposits of the Chapala paleolake, as well as a suitable structural setting that allowed the development of a medium to low enthalpy geothermal system. The mainly effusive volcanic activity of the zone is andesitic basaltic to dacitic in composition and it is related to calc-alkaline magma series, which was developed between 2.2 and 1.2 Ma. However, the Oligocene-Miocene age units are hidden and correspond to the geothermal system reservoir. From the structural point of view, the main faults in the study area are the Ixtlan fault with NW-SE direction and the Nogales fault with NE-SW direction, both normal with left lateral components. The left lateral movements favor the permeability due to friction between blocks. The Ixtlan fault works with the extensive tectonics of western Mexico and controls the upflow, while the Nogales fault responds to the transtensive of the central sector of the TMVB and it limits the geothermal activity. The cross-fault interaction of these positively oriented structures with the current stress fields allowed the development of a favorable setting for geothermal upflow. From the cross-fault, the geothermal system is closed by a horst in the north area and by a graben at the south one, while a semi-graben virtually brings up the reservoir at the West area.
