Oxidative damage in lipids in the central nervous system and spleen in iron-deficient mice

Oxidative damage in lipids in the central nervous system and spleen in iron-deficient mice

ANABELLA MARTINEZ DOMINGUEZ IRAZU CONTRERAS YANEZ JOSE ANTONIO ESTRADA GUADARRAMA (2017)

Oxidative stress (OS) is considered a risk factor for neurodegenerative disorders. Iron concentrations have been related to OS; however, the effect of iron deficiency (ID) on the induction of OS in the central nervous system (CNS) is unknown. A murine model of chronic diet-induced ID using 2 month-old male BALB/c mice (6 specimen), was used to determine its role in OS induction. Lipid peroxidation was determined by measuring thiobarbituric acid-reactive species (TBARS) in the CNS, using the spleen for comparison. A decrease of peroxidation products in the CNS of the ID group (ID CNS), compared to controls fed on a regular diet, was found. The spleen showed a significant increase of lipid peroxidation in the ID group. Our results suggest that chronic ID may have differential effects on OS in the CNS and peripheral tissues. A decreased amount of reactive oxygen species in the basal state may be related to alterations on normal CNS metabolism and functions under chronic ID.

Primary cultured astrocytes from old rats are capable to activate the Nrf2 response against MPP+ toxicity after tBHQ pretreatment

ADRIANA ALARCON AGUILAR ARMANDO LUNA LOPEZ JOSE LUIS VENTURA GALLEGOS ROBERTO CARLOS LAZZARINI LECHUGA SONIA GALVAN ARZATE VIRIDIANA YAZMIN GONZALEZ PUERTOS Julio Morán Andrade ABEL SANTAMARIA DEL ANGEL MINA KONIGSBERG FAINSTEIN (2014)

Astrocytes are key players for brain physiology, protecting neurons by releasing antioxidant enzymes; however, they are also susceptible to damage by neurotoxins. Nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-like 2 (Nrf2) is a central regulator of the antioxidant response, and therefore, pharmacologic inducers are often used to activate this transcription factor to induce cellular protection. To date, it still remains unknown if cells from aged animals are capable of developing this response. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to determine if cortical astrocytes derived from old rats are able to respond to tertbuthyl-hydroquinene (tBHQ) pretreatment and stimulate the Nrf2-antioxidant response pathway to induce an antioxidant strategy against MPP+ toxicity, one of the most used molecules to model Parkinson's disease. Our results show that, although astrocytes from adult and old rats were more susceptible to MPP+ toxicity than astrocytes from newborn rats, when pretreated with tertbuthyl-hydroquinene, they were able to transactivate Nrf2, increasing antioxidant enzymes and developing cellular protection. These results are discussed in terms of the doses used to create protective responses.

“Mexico half way of making”: Carlos Chávez and the Foundation of the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA) (1945-1947)

Abstract

I am focusing on the interaction between a cultural agent, Carlos Chávez, and the government elite, related to the circumstances of the enunciation of a public and official organism, INBA (The National Institute of Fine Arts), because I assume that political relations are fundamental to understand a process that endorsed the official culture as an appendage of politics. In spite of its relevance, this subject has not been studied. Based on archival documentation (at the National Archive of Mexico and the archive of INBA) I am examining the cultural policies derived from the foundation of INBA. Due to the current pandemic situation, it was not possible to consult other documental sources. I am formulating that the concept of “high culture” was at the core of a wider conflict between governmental interests and those of representative social actors, and I conclude that this obstacle would have conferred a major political and symbolical importance to the Institute, and consequently, would restrict its budget.

Prolactin (PRL) is a 23-kDa protein that can be synthesized and secreted by pituitary and extrapituitary tissues such as immune cells due to its expression being regulated by two independent promoter regions. The promoter which is responsible for extrapituitary expression contains the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) ¿1149 G/T previously associated with autoimmune diseases in various populations. This study evaluates the relationship of PRL ¿1149 G/T polymorphism with PRL serum levels and clinical characteristics in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients from western Mexico.

A reassessment of Mappia (Icacinaceae) taxonomy using environmental data

Una reevaluación de la taxonomía de Mappia (Icacinaceae) utilizando datos ambientales

RODRIGO STEFANO DUNO Israel Loera Diego Angulo (2020)

Mappia (Icacinaceae) is a genus comprising four species inhabiting Mesoamerica and the Greater Antilles. In the most recent phylogenetic analysis based on morphological data, three species, representing a continental clade (Mappia longipes, M. mexicana and M. multiflora) sister to the Antillean species M. racemosa, were supported. Our aims in this study were to evaluate whether environmental data support the previous hypothesis in Mappia entities.

On centrally generically tame algebras over perfect fields

RAYMUNDO BAUTISTA RAMOS JESUS EFREN PEREZ TERRAZAS LEONARDO SALMERON CASTRO (2016)

We show that the central generic tameness of a finite-dimensional algebra Λover a (possibly finite) perfect field, is equivalent to its non-almost sharp wildness. In this case: we give, for each natural number d, parametrizations of the indecomposable Λ-modules with central endolength d, modulo finite scalar extensions, over rational algebras. Moreover, we show that the central generic tameness of Λis equivalent to its semigeneric tameness, and that in this case, algebraic boundedness coincides with central finiteness for generic Λ-modules.

Aspidoscelis costatus costatus (Squamata, Teiidae): high elevation clutch production for a population of whiptail lizards

GISELA GRANADOS GONZALEZ CARLOS PEREZ ALMAZAN ALDO GOMEZ BENITEZ JAMES MARTIN WALKER Oswaldo Hernández Gallegos (2020)

Artículo del tamaño de nidada en la lagartija Aspidoscelis costatus costatus.

Clutch size and number of clutches per reproductive cycle are important life history traits that can be influenced by anatomical, physiological, evolutionary, and ecological factors. This report on the clutch size and number of clutches of an endemic Mexican whiptail lizard, Aspidoscelis costatus costatus (Cope, 1878), is based on a study of population at an unsually high elevation for a member of this genus. The study site is located in Ixtapan de la Sal, southeastern Estado de México, Central Mexico, at 2090 m a.s.l. Lizards were sampled in June 2006, and from May to July 2007, where females of Aspidoscelis costatus costatus were collected by hand along a drift fence. Female reproductive condition was evaluated based on abdominal palpation for presence of developing eggs; clutch size was determined by actual counts of either vitellogenic follicles or oviductal eggs. The smallest reproductive female was 77 mm snout vent length; females produced a minimum of two clutches during the breeding season, the mean clutch size of 6.5 eggs (n = 33) was one of the largest reported for the genus. However, both length and width of its eggs, and the relative clutch mass have not been diminished by development of a large clutch. Additionally, comparisons of clutch size were undertaken within the polytypic A. costatus complex, within the genus Aspidoscelis, and between certain genera of whiptail lizards. This apparently represents the first study of whiptail lizards (genus Aspidoscelis), assessing the aforementioned reproductive characteristics, in a population above 2000 m.
