MIRELLA ROMERO BASTIDAS Bernardo Murillo Amador Luis Guillermo Hernández Montiel ENRIQUE TROYO DIEGUEZ Alejandra Nieto Garibay (2022)

"The application of metallic nanoparticles improves the yield and content of bioactive compounds in plants. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of the foliar application of copper nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) in the yield and content of bioactive compounds in lettuce. Different concentrations of CuO-NPs (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 6 mg mL−1 ) were applied in lettuce. The yield, nutraceutical quality, and enzymatic activity were determined. Foliar spraying of CuO-NPs induced an increase in the biosynthesis of bioactive compounds. In addition to an increase in the activity of the enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in lettuce plants, there were no negative effects on yield. Therefore, with the application of CuO-NPs, better quality lettuces are produced for the human diet due to the higher production of bioactive compounds."

Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria Improve Growth and Fruit Quality of Cucumber under Greenhouse Conditions

GERARDO ZAPATA SIFUENTES Luis Guillermo Hernández Montiel Jorge Sáenz Mata Manuel Fortis Hernández EDUARDO BLANCO CONTRERAS ROBERTO GREGORIO CHIQUITO CONTRERAS Pablo Preciado Rangel (2022)

"Cucumber fruit is rich in fiber, carbohydrates, protein, magnesium, iron, vitamin B, vitamin C, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and antioxidants. Agrochemical-based production of cucumber has tripled yields; however, excessive synthetic fertilization has caused problems in the accumulation of salts in the soil and has increased production costs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of three strains of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on cucumber fruit growth and quality under greenhouse conditions. The rhizobacteria Pseudomonas paralactis (KBendo6p7), Sinorhizobium meliloti (KBecto9p6), and Acinetobacter radioresistens (KBendo3p1) was adjusted to 1 × 108 CFU mL−1 . The results indicated that the inoculation with PGPR improved plant height, stem diameter, root length, secondary roots, biomass, fruit size, fruit diameter, and yield, as well as nutraceutical quality and antioxidant capacity, significantly increasing the response of plants inoculated with A. radioresistens and S. meliloti in comparison to the control. In sum, our findings showed the potential functions of the use of beneficial bacteria such as PGPR for crop production to reduce costs, decrease pollution, and achieve world food safety and security."

Effect of Pectimorf on the rooting ability, and morpho-physiological physiological trials of national cocoa (Theobroma cacaoL.) under different substrates

JUAN JOSE REYES PEREZ Luis Tarquino Llerena Ramos Víctor Hugo Reynel Chila Juan Antonio Torres Rodríguez FAROUK SAAD Luis Guillermo Hernández Montiel Wilmer Tezara (2022)

"Cocoa is an economical cash crop that is formerly planted worldwide. Cuttings are a method of vegetative propagation suitable for maintaining desirable characteristics in cocoa trees. A greenhouse experiment was performed to evaluate the optimal concentrations of Pectimorf® (0, 10, 50, and 100 mg L-1) for rooting ability and seedling establishment as well as some physiological trials of 4 months EETP-800 national cocoa cuttings grown under two different substrates (S1: 80% soil + 20% sand and S2: 70% soil + 20% sand + 10% rice husk). The data showed that in most cases there are no significant differences in vegetative growth and root characteristics as well as gas exchange parameters between the two substrates. On the other hand, the application of Pectimorf® concentration enhanced all tested traits compared to untreated plants. The most effective in this regard was 100 mg L-1, that giving the highest value of all trials. As for the interaction effect, the result also shows that the application of Pectimorf® concentration in special at 100 mg L-1 among two substrates had an additive effect on plant growth, gas exchange, and survival percentage compared to non-treated cuttings. The application of 100 mg L-1 Pectimorf® with S2 substrate produced stronger seedlings with a higher survival percentage. This protocol can be used commercially for cocoa propagation commercially."

Potential of Debaryomyces hansenii Strains on the Inhibition of Botrytis cinerea in Blueberry Fruits (Vaccinium corymbosum L.)

SURELYS RAMOS BELL Luis Guillermo Hernández Montiel RITA MARIA VELAZQUEZ ESTRADA JUAN ANTONIO HERRERA GONZALEZ PORFIRIO GUTIERREZ MARTINEZ (2022)

"Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) is a crop with great potential for exportation and is very important for its antioxidant properties. However, this fruit is susceptible to different factors of deterioration and attack by pathogens. Botrytis cinerea is the main cause of post-harvest losses in this crop. Antagonistic yeasts from the Debaryomyces hansenii species, which is of marine origin, have been proposed as an alternative method for fungal control. For this reason, this study evaluated the in vitro and in vivo antagonistic capacity of the yeast against B. cinerea. The in vitro growth of the fungus was inhibited by 90% and germination was reduced by 100%, and through the production of volatile organic compounds, the growth of the pathogen was inhibited by 32.5%. Photographic evidence by electron microscopy revealed the effects caused by D. hansenii on B. cinerea. The incidence study showed a 50% reduction in the incidence of the disease caused by B. cinerea in blueberries, while quality parameters—such as soluble solids, titratable acidity, and pH—presented stable values, delaying the maturation process of the fruits. Likewise, the rate of reduction in firmness and physiological weight loss was lower, and the blueberries preserved their quality for a longer time."

Copper oxide nanoparticles biosynthetized Copper oxide nanoparticles biosynthetized biosynthetizedimprove germination improve germination improve germination and bioactive compounds in wheat sprouts

Hortensia Ortega OrtÍz JAZMIN MONTSERRAT GAUCIN DELGADO Pablo Preciado Rangel Manuel Fortis Hernández Luis Guillermo Hernández Montiel Efraín de la Cruz Lázaro Liliana Lara Capistrán (2022)

"Metal nanoparticles have many positive effects in improving crop production and productivity and allow for increased germination and rapid crop establishment under field conditions. The metallic nanoparticles applied in this study were copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) biosynthesized using orange peel (Citrus X sinensis) as a reducing agent to avoid or reduce toxicity in wheat seeds and sprouts. This study determined the effect of CuONPs on germination, radicle and plumule length, as well as the production of phytochemical compounds in wheat sprouts. The seeds were treated with suspensions of CuONPs at the following concentrations: 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 6 mg mL-1. The results indicate that the use of low doses of CuONPs (0.5 mg mL-1), improved germination, vigor, plumule and radicle length, in addition to increasing the biosynthesis of phytochemical compounds in wheat shoots. A high concentration of CuONPs (6 mg mL-1) causes inhibitory effects due to Cu accumulation and phytotoxicity in plant tissue. The use of CuONPs for green synthesis is a viable alternative to obtain beneficial effects in germination and seedling development, as well as greater secondary metabolite production."

Multiplication of native endomycorrhizae isolated from arid soils on organic substrates in wheat plants (Triticum aestivum)

JOSÉ RAFAEL PAREDES JÁCOME ROSALINDA MENDOZA VILLARREAL ROBERTO GREGORIO CHIQUITO CONTRERAS Luis Guillermo Hernández Montiel VALENTIN ROBLEDO TORRES Homero Ramírez Rodríguez (2023)

"Purpose Organic residues of coffee pulp, sugarcane bagasse and mature bovine manure are a source of organic matter and nutrients for the multiplication of endomycorrhizae consortia. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to multiply the AMFs in such substrates to decrease soil and water pollution. Method A pot experiment under greenhouse conditions was conducted in order to evaluate the influence of agricultural residues (C2-GEC, C3-PAR, C12-PRO, C14-ZAR) with different genera of endomycorrhizae isolated from semi-arid soils, 75 days after the crop was established. Agronomic characteristics and mineral content of N, K, Ca, Mg, and Fe in root and shoot were evaluated in wheat (Triticum aestivum). Results Multiplication of endomycorrhizae was influenced by the residue type. Greater production of spores was ob-served in the coffee pulp, followed by the sugarcane bagasse, where a higher colonization was obtained in combination of C2-GEC and C3-PAR consortia. This consortia combination also was one of those that have increased the content of N, K, Ca, Mg, and Fe in roots and shoots of wheat. Conclusion Combination of native endomycorrhiza substrates and consortia provides an alternative tool that benefits the physiology and nutrition of the plant to be used in sustainable agricultural production systems."

Coinfection and in vitro interaction of Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae and Pestalotiopsis mangiferae associated with dieback in branches of mango (Mangifera indica) Manila variety, in Veracruz, Mexico

LILIANA EUNICE SAUCEDO PICAZO Luis Guillermo Hernández Montiel NORMA FLORES ESTEVEZ PATRICIA GEREZ FERNANDEZ ANGEL FERNANDO ARGÜELLO ORTIZ JUAN CARLOS NOA CARRAZANA (2022)

"Dieback disease caused by fungal complexes is a severe problem in mango trees (Mangifera indica). Its main symptoms are branch rot, gummosis, and finally, the tree’s death. In this work, the species of the fungal complex causing mango dieback in the Manila variety in Veracruz, Mexico were identified. The in vitro interaction of two species belonging to the complex was evaluated and the severity of the co-infection in mango branches. Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae and Pestalotiopsis mangiferae were identified as causal agents of mango dieback in the producing area of Veracruz. In coinfected mango branches, greater severity of necrosis was observed than in individual infections. Liquid culture filtrates applied in co-cultures showed different results for each species of phytopathogen. The P. mangiferae filtrate had no significant antagonistic effects on the growth of L. pseudotheobromae (inhibition of 2.68%), while the L. pseudotheobromae filtrate inhibited 41.38% of P. mangiferae. The results show that multiple infections in mango trees increase the damage caused by dieback, which could directly impact the development of control strategies."
